SAL POLITICAL SNITCH

As San Antonio and Texas politicos try to assure the populace that all is right with the world, the Lightning has learned from insiders that as many as 200 more company employees could be headed for the exit door, and as many as a 1,000 jobs with Toyota suppliers await a similar fate.

Toyota became the second major company to "shock" the bureaucrats and political royalty of San Antonio by announcing a shutdown of the struggling truck factory for "about" 3 months, beginning in August.

Earlier this summer AT&T pulled its corporate offices from SA and made a hurried exit to Dallas, taking 700 high-dollar executives with it.

Now Toyota, which has already cut 200 temporary workers, says it will have no further layoffs.

Some employed at the plant and its myriad of suppliers aren't buying that, in much the same way as Americans aren't buying the bloated Tundra and its gas swilling appetite.

Of course, the big business hypes and government types like County Judge Nelson Wolff, Mayor Phil Hardberger and Governor Rick Perry are trotting out the "silver lining" scenarios, trying their best to paint lipstick on the swine.

Hardberger is especially rattled.

He has been pursuing a City Charter change that would give more time at the trough to "experienced" politicians.

As pointed out in this space many times, the most experienced people in local government are the ones who keep getting caught unaware by events that a blind hog would have spotted.

As for Toyota and its partners we will see if the promises made by the truck giant are honored, or if there are more surprises in the offing.

More to follow.
